It was a celebrity blowout as Susan Sarandon, Lauren Bacall, Kathie Lee Gifford, Neil Simon, Philip and Tricia Smith, Rupert Graves, Jane Powell, Joyce Randolph, Lynn Redgrave, Roger Berlind, Jed Bernstein, Kate Burton, Dina Merrill, Sally Ann Howes, and Barnard Hughes, among others, sang praises and show tunes to celebrate Broadway daddy James Nederlander’s big 8-0 b’day. Performing just for Jimmy were Charlotte D’Amboise, Tommy Tune, Ruthie Henshall, Nick Scandalios, Sutton Foster, and a bevy of hoofers and singers. Neil Simon took the podium and recalled: “Jimmy and I met one day, and he said he wanted to change the name of the Alvin Theatre. When he asked me what I thought if he renamed it the Neil Simon Theatre, I was so shocked I said, ‘Let me think about it.’” Here’s to you, Jimmy!
