Five hundred of New York’s most elegant filled Cipriani 42nd Street for the Horticultural Society’s Annual Gala. Honorary chairmen Bunny Williams and John Rosselli, along with chairmen Dominique Browning (editor-in-chief for House & Garden), Catherine Alder, Suzette de Marigny Smith, Mary Phipps, Shelia Stephenson, Mark Gilbertson, Linda Garnett, Cindy Ketchum, Mary Van Pelt, Barbara and Donald Tober, Philip MacGregor, Pia Lindstrom, and Ron Wendt assembled a splendid Evening of Beauty to benefit the Society’s outreach efforts to almost every community, the many gardens sprouting in every borough, and the vocational training for the soon-to-be-tried-or-released that now inhabit Riker’s Island. Design chairman Charlotte Frieze, who happens to be the talented Garden Editor at House & Garden, challenged several fashion, floral, interior, and landscape designers to create scintillating centerpieces that would express the evening’s theme, which was “A Floral Symphony.” To meet this challenge, some of the city’s Brightest Blooming Bulbs (including Belle Fleur, Escada, Carolina Herrera, Scalamandré, Lotus NYC, Jane Packer, Fiori, Lilly Pulitzer, Ron Wendt Designs, Studio Sweet Pea, Jane Carroll Inc., and Zézé) created floral models for every table to captivate and enchant. Thus did New York’s Horticultural Society exude the “Sweet Smell of Success” once again.
