Bill O’Shaughnessy, otherwise known as W.O., celebrated the big Six Oh-oh! at Le Cirque with cocktails, dinner, and dancing. But there was a surprise in store for him and the evening’s host, Nancy Curry O’Shaughnessy, luminous wife of the charismatic President and CEO of Whitney Radio. “It turned into a roast, and there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it!” laughed W.O., whose longtime friend, Mario Cuomo, toasted the man of the evening—not before ribbing it in, however. “Sixty-five isn’t terribly old,” joked the former Gov. “You just have to get used to some jarring changes. For example, getting those telephone calls at 9:30 PM, saying, ‘Did I wake you?’ Or when you finally conclude that it’s easier to go without sex than go without eyeglasses!” The mix of Republicans and Democrats roared, along with the many speakers, including Arthur Hill Dietrick (nicknamed “Baron Dietrick, Economic Czar of Connecticut” by W.O.), who toasted Bill on his “great legs” (revealed by ubiquitous Bermuda shorts during summer). Kenneth Cole informed us that “W.O.’s got great sole!”; and State Supreme Court Judge (and Admiral) Andrew O’Rourke teased, “Bill’s new book is called Great Men I Have Known and Admired. Basically, it’s an autobiography!”
Other playful guests included Kerry Kennedy Cuomo, Maria Cuomo Cole (arriving on crutches with the help of her hubby, Kenneth), William Plunkett, Barry Slotnick, Kevin O’Connor and wife Kathleen Plunkett, Thomas McKnight, Rick Lazio, Mario Biaggi, Susan and John McDonnell, Julian and Lisa Niccolini, Bruce and Marcia Snyder, and W.O.’s father-in-law, Bernard Curry. But by far, the evening’s showstopper had to be Kitty Carlisle Hart crooning “I’ll Be Loving You...always.” To that, The Sheet says to the celebrated Radio Mogul, “Hear! Hear!”
