Angela Lansbury, Stewart Lane and Bonnie Comley

Broadway stars came out in full force for this year’s Drama League Gala, “ A Musical Celebration of Broadway,” which honored the legendary Angela Lansbury. Chaired by producer Bonnie Comley, this spectacular gala, held at the Pierre Hotel, is always one of the most beloved theatre benefits of the season.

Many Broadway A-listers wowed the crowd with their tribute to Lansbury’s illustrious career, including Catherine Zeta-Jones, who is appearing with Lansbury in A Little Night Music, and Bernadette Peters, who sang a stirring interpretation of “Not While I’m Around” (from Sweeney Todd). Donna Murphy, Beth Fowler, Len Cariou, Dee Hoty, Victor Garber, Ann Hampton Callaway, Alexander Gemignani, Will Swensen, and Sarah Rice also (literally) sang Lansbury’s praises. One of the highlights of the performance was a hilarious gender-bending rendition of the song “Bosom Buddies” (from Mame), by Broadway hunks Cheyenne Jackson and Christopher Sieber. Charles Busch and Edie Falco starred in the tribute as well. The show was co-directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer and his Spring Awakening Associate Director, Beatrice Terry.

Other notable guests included Stewart Lane, Arlene Dahl and Marc Rosen, Cece Black, Pia Lindstrom, Ari and Coco Kopelman, Guy Robinson and Elizabeth Stribling, Drama League President Jano Herbosch and Executive Director Gabriel Shanks.

Lansbury’s career spans more than a half-century, and at 84 she’s still going strong, with no plans to retire from the stage. Seems like when it comes to maintaining youthful vigor and spirit, treading the boards is better than a treadmill.
