Though they came capeless and without the skin-tight blue suits or Wonder Woman GoGo boots, guests at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gala packed plenty of sartorial superpower. Celebrating the exhibition of Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy, the black-tie event boasted a guest list of 750 glam crusaders that was approved by Fashion’s wintry wonder woman, Anna Wintour. George Clooney (his Batman
costume nowhere in sight) and Julia Roberts, whose superpower has always been her smile, hosted the event, which raised an unprecedented amount for the Met. With tables ranging from $75,000 to a quarter of a million, the benefit garnered $7.4 million for the Institute. Superman himself, Giorgio Armani, was Honorary Chair, surveying the kingdom he keeps.
The Superheroes exhibit, on display through August, features five dozen superhero ensembles from movies, avant-garde haute couture, and high-performance sportswear revealing how the superhero serves as a metaphor for fashion and its ability to empower and transform the human body. With bigger names than packed the Justice League, the Institute’s gala featured the real-world equivalent of the super and the powered. |
