It was a show-stopping evening at the Broadway Salutes Arts Horizons Gala, at the Edison Ballroom, as some of Broadway’s greatest talents and supporters paid tribute to theatre’s “royal couple,” Stewart Lane and Bonnie Comley.
Also honored was John Devol, founder of Arts Horizons, which has been bringing Arts Education programs to millions of children in the New York area for over 30 years.
WABC’s Lauren Glassberg was the emcee and co-chairs were Diane Passage and Peter Culver, with honorary patrons Celeste Holm, LeRoy Neiman, and Hal Prince.
Live performances included Mat Eisenstein, associate conductor of Broadway’s Next to Normal, accompanying singer Jen Collella with a tune from the show. And Arts Horizons piano students from CS 214 in the South Bronx also entertained the crowd.
But the real party started when guests were asked to participate in a Taiko drumming session, which involved tiny Japanese drums, hand-decorated by some of Arts Horizons’ kids. The percussive jam session certainly created a unique way to “drum” up support for the arts.
