Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise

Fans fought to catch a glimpse of recently betrothed lovebirds Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes outside the Ziegfeld Theatre as they arrived for the premiere of his summer blockbuster, War of the Worlds, benefiting the American Red Cross. In the Steven Spielberg remake of the classic H.G. Wells novel, Cruise stars as a working-class Jersey man who fights to save his kids (played by Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin) when alien tripod fighting machines invade Earth and attempt to destroy the planet. (The 1953 film of the same name was an adaptation of the famous radio play performed by Orson Wells and the Mercury Theatre, which aired live on CBS Radio on October 30, 1938, and panicked the country with its “reporting” of an invasion of Earth by an army of Martians in indestruc-tible spaceships.) The 2005 sci-fi. thriller also stars Tim Robbins and Miranda Otto.
