Marlo Thomas, Eve Ensler

Sisters supported themselves pink at the second annual “Gratitude Breakfast,” benefiting the New York Women in Communications Foundation. Eve Ensler, creator of the Vagina Monologues, receiving the organization’s yearly “Matrix Award,” deemed the power-charged event “a vagina-friendly breakfast.” NYWICI President and CEO, Gail Blanke, started the program by introducing the “smart, sexy, resourceful and in charge of her own life” actress, producer, and best-selling author, Marlo Thomas. Marlo then revealed how her own Italian grandmother, who played the drums in a Pasadena beer garden, inspired her to join the women’s revolution. This remarkable woman taught Marlo that to take away someone’s unique sense of self was, in it’s own way, extreme violence. Keynoter Ensler, who transformed the success of her play into a nationwide campaign to help stop violence against women, revved up the room to celebrate the “V” revolution. “When I started the Vagina Monologues, vagina wasn’t on the top of anyone’s lips,” she proclaimed. “Women are the most powerful force on the planet!”
