Congrats to Margo and John Catsimatidis, honorees of the 31st Annual “Promise Ball” at the Waldorf that benefited the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Mary Tyler Moore, appearing live onscreen, presented the couple with the “2003 Humanitarian Award” for their significant contributions to fighting the disease.
Dinner, dancing, and an auction delighted guests, who included Diandra Douglas, Sale Johnson, Rob Burnett, Bill Fugazy, John and Andrea Stark, Larry and Denise Wohl, Richard and Renee Steinberg, and “hairdresser to the stars” Rudolfo.
Rosie O’Donnell originally intended to be the evening’s celebrity auctioneer, but had to back out at the last minute to recover from a difficult day in court with a $100-$125 mil lawsuit, now (sensibly, we think) mooted out by Judge Gammerman. Chuck Scarborough quipped, “So, let’s sue Rosie for $125 mil for breach of an auctioneer’s contract!” Still, the auction proceeded as scheduled with Lorraine Bracco, Toys “R” Us CEO Michael Goldstein, and professional auctioneer Ric Cherwin saving the day, with a whopping $2.2 mil raised!
