The stars glittered brightly for the Metropolitan Museum’s
annual Costume Institute Gala. This is always the major fashion
event of the year, with the celebrities’ gowns garnering
more attention than the actual garb in the exhibit.
This year’s party was co-chaired by Anna Wintour, Oprah
Winfrey, and Patrick Robinson, Gap’s executive vice-president
of global design.
Robinson described the fete as “the Oscars of fashion,” and
the paparazzi-packed red carpet proved him right. Katy Perry
literally lit up the room in a gown from designer Cutie Circuit,
which had LED strips sewn in. Jessica Alba looked glam in a
Sophie Theallet for Gap dress. Kirsten Dunst sported a smashing
white and off-white, one-shoulder Rodarte for Gap gown,
and Eva Mendes looked sultry in a Dolce & Gabbana number.
Some of the stars were wearing dresses that went up for auction
at the Gap’s Fifth Avenue store the next day.
Other A-listers included Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez, Chloe
Sevigny, Mick Jagger, Taylor Swift, Sarah Jessica Parker, Melania Trump,
Brooke Shields, Karl Lagerfeld, Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors, and Lady
Gaga, who entertained the power-packed crowd.
The event kicked off the Costume Institute’s latest exhibition, entitled
American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity, which is running
through August 15th and explores developing perceptions of the modern
American woman from the 1890s to the 1940s.
A love of art is one thing, but at this museum event, it’s all about a
passion for fashion.
