Hampton Sheet: What does a chiropractor do?
Dr. Smatt: A chiropractor detects and corrects subluxations of the spinal column. We reconnect the brain to the body through the specific, scientific, chiropractic adjustment.

HS: What is a subluxation?
DS: A spinal bone or vertebra out of its normal position, interfering with the nerve messages flowing from the brain to the body.

HS: How do I know I am healthy?
DS: If you do not have any subluxations and your brain is in communication to all your body parts along with proper diet, exercise, mental attitude, and rest.

HS: When should someone get checked for subluxation?
DS: Right after the birth process. It is easier to correct a subluxation when it first occurs.

HS: What is the best kept secret in healthcare?
DS: The best kept secret is that the body is more resilient than most think. When the body is free from interference then it can repair itself.

HS: What about taking medicine to feel better?
DS: You can, but that is not my choice. I suggest that you find the cause of the problem and correct it instead of treating the effect. I like to use the analogy of a fire alarm. When the alarm sounds to detect a fire, you put out the fire, you don’t dismantle the alarm. Symptoms are the fire alarm for our bodies. We must find the cause of the problem, not mask the symptom with medication. There is always a cause.

HS: I exercise all the time, eat healthy, and feel great. Why fix what’s not broken?
DS: Most people think they are healthy if they feel good. Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there that will experience death as their first symptom from a problem that could have been prevented. Most of us are lucky enough to have a symptom so we can address the cause.

HS: Why are some people addicted to going to the Chiropractor?
DS: If you carefully think about that, I believe you are addicted to staying healthy by removing the nerve interference in your body. Once the interference is removed and you regain your health you will make chiropractic part of your lifestyle.

HS: Do you adjust children as you would adults?
DS: Children adjust much easier than adults. Therefore they require a minimal amount of pressure.

HS: How often should a child be checked for subluxations?
DS: All children should be checked right after the trauma of the birth process, when they start crawling, when they start walking, after any minor fall or other injury, when they cry more than normal, when they can’t sleep, when they have ear infections, colic, hyperactivity, etc.

HS: Dr. Smatt, your passion for chiropractic is overwhelming, considering you’ve been in practice for 30 years.
DS: I feel like every day is my first day in practice. I’m always excited because I get to witness miracles every day of my life. I started as a patient myself when I was 13, suffering from ulcerative colitis. I regained my health after four months of chiropractic care and have never received medical care since. My wife, Dr. Lori Smatt, is also a Chiropractor and gave birth to our three children naturally. Our children received a chiropractic adjustment right after the birth process and then as a way of life. I am blessed to have the knowledge that the body is a self-healing organism as long as it is not interfered with.

HS: Tell me about your latest endeavor with Radu in Southampton and the Plaza Hotel.
DS: I was introduced to Radu, famous as a world-renowned fitness trainer with celebrity clientele from all over the world. He told me that he was opening Radu Physical Culture in The Plaza Hotel and thought, from experience, that exercise and chiropractic was a great match. I jumped on board with The Plaza and got involved in Radu Physical Culture in Southampton as well. My associate, Dr. Wil Schweigert, runs the Southampton facility and I personally run The Plaza location.

HS: What’s your advice to everyone reading this interview?
DS: Get your spine checked for nerve interference, clear out the subluxation and reach your maximum potential mentally, physically and spiritually.
