“Voluptuous Panic” was the theme for the 18th annual Watermill Center summer benefit gala held on its six-acre compound, which included outrageous art exhibits and a variety of performance artists. There were 25 site-specific installations and performances that interpreted the theme of the evening created by artists from around the globe. Highlights included silver-painted ladies in thong bikinis and a clock-like monument, hanging several stories high, with a man using his arms and legs as the clock’s hour and minute hands. The gala also served as a celebration for founder Robert Wilson’s 70th birthday. Chairs included Sheikha Paula al-Sabah, Lisa Anastos, Wallis Annenberg, Lisa de Kooning, Barbara Goldsmith, Audrey and Martin Gruss, Anne Hearst McInerney and Jay McInerney, and Calvin Klein. Guests included Katie Lee, Richard Johnson and Sessa von Richthofen, Beth de Woody, Rufus Wainwright, Ross Bleckner, Bob Colacello, Katharina Otto-Bernstein, Fabiola Beracasa, Somers and Jonathan Farkas, Stewart Lane and Bonnie Comley, Campion and Tatiana Platt, Francis Hayward, Barbaralee Diamonstein Spielvogel and Carl Spielvogel, Nicole Miller, and over 1,000 other notable attendees. They all enjoyed cocktails and a silent auction followed by dinner and a live auction, which was conducted by Simon de Pury-all under an elaborately decorated tent designed by Megan Whitmarsh and Matthew Salata. Generous supporters helped raise close to $1.5 mil to benefit the center’s mission to provide a unique environment for young and emerging artists.
