Philanthropists and leading media moguls headed in droves to Tavern on the Green for the Women's eNews's 21 Leaders for the 21st Century Gala, where 21 women were honored for their outstanding contributions and inspirational motivation to their communities. Women's eNews has become a distinguished online news source-trying to fill the gender gap in world media coverage and bring issues of special interest to women to the forefront. Emcee Bill Moyers facilitated the evening's awards ceremony, and major TV journalists Maria Hinojosa (CNN), Torri Silver (CTV News 76), Raghida Dergham (NBC), and Lynn Sherr (ABC) presented the honors to seven individuals who "transform what is, to what could be;" seven who "harness the energy of women;" and seven who "tap power to provoke change."
A few of the influential women honored were: Loreen Arbus, the illustrious philanthropist, cable TV pioneer, and inspiring mentor; Wangari Maathai, this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner and founder of the environmental Green Belt Movement; and Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, the United Arab Emirate's first female cabinet minister, member of the Sharjah royal family, and role model in the global business world and marketplace.
Notable attendees included: Gloria Steinem; former ABC Anchor Marlene Sanders with son, CNN's Jeffrey Toobin; and Arianna Huffington.
