Mayor Bloomberg with Young Heart Liberty Medalist Arabella Uhry

NYC's unsung heroes were honored at the annual Gracie Mansion presentation of the New York Post's Liberty Medals, a ceremony hosted by Mayor Bloomberg and Post publisher Lachlan Murdoch, emceed by Regis Philbin, and attended by Gov. George Pataki. The silver medals, designed by Milton "I Love New York" Glaser were awarded in 10 categories, including: Ambassador, Bravest, Community, Courage, Leadership, Lifetime Achievement, Educator, Freedom, New York's Finest, and Young Heart (under 17).

The awards were established by The Post in the wake of the events of 9/11, "to remind us of what a remarkable, energetic city we live in, really the best city in the world," Murdoch stated.

A Who's Who panel of two dozen New Yorkers included: Police Commish Ray Kelly, Fire Commish Nicholas Scoppetta, Miramax's Harvey Weinstein, gossip maven extraordinaire Cindy Adams, Vanity Fair's Graydon Carter, Rabbi Arthur Schneier, and Yankees' owner George Steinbrenner, who all cast ballots to choose the 10 winners from citizens nominated by Post readers. We Love New York!
