Movers and shakers from the worlds of fashion, beauty, and entertainment mixed during the Legends Gala, held at the Metropolitan Pavilion. The event, which celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF), raised more than $4.3 mil and was hosted by Al Roker and Deborah Roberts. Hearst Magazines Prez Cathleen Black and Federated Department Stores CEO Terry Lundgren each received the OCRF Legends Award, in recognition of their research fundraising efforts.
Actress/producer/director Trudie Styler (Sting’s wife) was also presented with the Liz Tilberis Humanitarian Award, for her commitment to the environment, human rights, and countless other causes. The award is named after the late Harper’s Bazaar editor in chief, who was an outspoken advocate and fundraiser for OCRF until her untimely death from ovarian cancer in 1999, at the age of 51.
Performances by a special “Disco Legends Revue,” including the Village People, Thelma Houston, Martha Walsh, and The Trammps, rocked the room. In the mix: Andrew Tilberis (widower of Liz Tilberis, with his Texas-born actress gal pal, Denise Dunn), Tommy Hilfiger, Milla Jovovich, Natalia Vodianova, Vera Wang, Kenneth Cole, Jill Stuart, Joy Behar, Kyan Douglas, Peter Boyle, Burberry CEO Rose Marie Bravo, Lesley Stahl, Monica Seles, Muf.e Potter Aston, David Barton, Dayle Haddon, Emma Heming, and Miss USA 2004 Shandi Finnessey.
There is no early-detection method for ovarian cancer; diag-nosis is late in 75 percent of all cases, with nearly 16,000 women in the U.S. losing their lives each year. Thanks to events like this, awareness of the disease and its warning signs and funding for ground-breaking new research are advancing daily. The efforts and struggles of so many valiant “legends” inspire us all....
