Roy Innis, Mayor Bloomberg

The Congress of Racial Equality—CORE—celebrated its 60th anniversary with a reception and awards dinner at the Sheraton on Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. What a night to remember as the NYPD Pipes and Drum Band trooped in playing “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes—so majestically it made the throng of nearly 4,000 stand to attention. Mistress of ceremonies Cindy Adams kicked off the night, followed by Mayor Bloomberg and an award ceremony presented by Roy Innis, Barry Slotnick, Nino Vendome, Cantor Fitzgerald CEO Howard Lutnick, Melodie Homer (widow of Leroy Homer, co-pilot on doomed United Airlines Flight 93), and of course the one-and-only Rudy Giuliani. Bloomberg glowed in his new spotlight, swarmed by media and fans, especially when an attractive blonde approached and requested a photo taken with him. The Mayor’s grinning reply: “Hey, it’s all part of the job.” After all, he is single.
