The jokes were flying at this year's sold-out Inner Circle Show at the Hilton. The annual black-tie charity gala, put on by the city's press corps, was filled with music, dancing, and, of course, plenty of jabs, poking fun at Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other New York politicos.
The dinner menu went like this:
Appetizers:
Linsalada from Madison Square Garden City Hall leeks
Main Courses:
Weiner schnitzel with hot tomatoes
pasta Dolanese with red sauce Zuccotti zucchini
Newt with nachos
linguini with MSG
Desserts:
NY Giants turnover
99 percent fat-free yogurt
Beverages:
1 percent milk
The event started with a roast of Bloomberg by the Inner Circle cast in a performance titled "Preoccupied," a poke at the Occupy Wall Street movement.
With jokes on the 99 percent and Bloomberg running for another term, the evening wasn't short on political jabs. Hizzoner wasn't the only target of the night—other political victims included scandal-plagued Eliot Spitzer, Police Commish Ray Kelly, disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner, and Council Speaker Christine Quinn.
The mayor, wearing a gray suit and yellow bow tie, gave the media his rebuttal in a spoof called "How to Succeed by Bloomberg," along with the cast of the Broadway musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Bloomberg mentors a young man, played by Nick Jonas, who's working on the restoration project at city hall. He continued his act throughout the night with jokes, acrobatics, dance, and songs (off key, naturally!).
In one act, he attempts to ban coffee as the latest target in his war against vices. "Why is everyone so excited? It's just a pilot program," the mayor says to an irritated cast. "We know what that means," responds a cast member. "It's permanent!"
