Bruce Springsteen performing onstage with various artists

Bruce Springsteen proved yet again why we call him The Boss when he took to the stage with an acoustic guitar and harmonica for a surprise performance at a tribute concert in his honor at Carnegie Hall. Twenty artists played their own takes on his legendary music. The concert, produced by Michael Dorf, raised $100,000 for the UJA-Federation of New York's Music for Youth Initiative.

Before Springsteen's performance, the evening held several memorable musical tributes to The Boss by Odetta, Steve Earle, Ronnie Spector, and Pattie Smith, who, taking the place of Jewel, spit like a truck driver (oh-so-rock 'n' roll!) after a performance of "Because the Night," the Springsteen-penned number that earned her a Top 20 hit.

The "Born in the U.S.A." crooner opened with some thoughts on the performances that evening, noting how it was "lovely and harrowing" seeing his songs performed by such great artists. After launching into an inspired version of "The Promised Land," he went on to belt out fan favorite "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)," and invited the performers back to the stage to help him out with the tune.
