She’s back! Kirstie Alley (star of the 90s Look Who’s Talking films), who hasn’t been seen since her NBC series Veronica’s Closet went off the air in 2000, has certainly grown in stature (and girth) since then. Stars gathered for the “big fat” premiere of her come-back Showtime series, Fat Actress, at Clearview Chelsea West Cinemas, followed by a bash at hot-spot Level V at Vento.
Fat Actress Alley and Showtime CEO Matt Blank, hosts of the festivities, took to the stage before the lights went down to discuss the show’s inspiration. “I [had] to be creative because I got chubby-wubby,” the divorced mother of two admitted. Blank chimed in: “Talk about making lemonade out of lemons.”
Now a Jenny Craig spokeswoman, the 5’7,” 200-lb. actress says she has lost weight, and expects to be down to 140 lbs., close to her usual 130, by next summer.
The series is about — you guessed it — a fat actress, and pokes fun at Alley’s infamous weight gain. In the premiere episode, Alley, who plays herself, goads her agent into sched-uling a meeting with NBC head honcho Jeff Zucker, also playing himself. After proclaiming that she’s too fat for TV, Alley names other TV actors “fatter than her,” then sleeps with an NBC exec, and lands her deal. The show also features an impressive roster of celebrity guest stars, including: Carmen Electra, John Travolta, Kelly Preston, Melissa Gilbert, and Kid Rock.
The Sheet greeted Alley and asked her, point-blank, if she’s noticed that people treat her differently, now that she’s fat. Her frank reply? “Being fat is a very liberating experience,” she said. “I don’t have to give a sh*t!”
When The Sheet caught up with Blank, we suggested that if he wanted to ensure the longevity of Fat Actress, he should keep its star stocked with Yodels!
Weighing in at the festivities along with Fat Actress stars Rachael Harris and Bryan Callen were: Bob Balaban, Harry Connick Jr. and Jill Goodacre, Rita Cosby, Francine LeFrak and Rick Friedberg, and Neil and Leba Sedaka. Alley is back — in a big way!
