In an impressive attempt to spotlight theatre history preservation, numerous stage enthusiasts flocked to the "Theatre Museum Awards," lending a show of support to the planned establishment of the first theatre museum in New York. On hand at the Hudson Theatre in the Millenium Broadway Hotel: Chairs Bonnie Comley and Stewart Lane, and actor Simon Jones, who emceed.
Kitty Carlisle Hart and Anne Kaufman Schneider presented an award for "Theatre History Preservation" to Michael Kantor and Laurence Maslon (Emmy Award-winning PBS series and book creators of Broadway: The American Musical). The "Excellence in Theatre Arts Education" award was presented to Inside Broadway's Michael Presser by Shubert Organization Chairman Gerald Schoenfeld, and to Periwinkle Productions by two-time Tony nominee Samuel E. Wright.
The event was a substantial milestone for the NYC theatre community. Comley commented, "The Theatre is live. It's of the moment. After that moment passes, theatre becomes an integral part of our history… the contributions of our honorees must be recognized and celebrated for ensuring that the theatre remains alive for generations to come."
