A-listers were out in full force at the Marriott Marquis, lending their support to "The Angel Ball," which benefited the G&P Foundation for Cancer Research. Singer/songwriter Denise Rich started the Foundation with son-in-law Philip Aouad, after her daughter Gabrielle Rich Aouad tragically passed away from leukemia in 1996 at the tender age of 27. Glamour's Cindi Leive and Russell and Kimora Lee Simmons were honored for their dedication to the cause.
Diva Patti LaBelle, also an honoree, gave a heartfelt speech accompanied by some tears, when she spoke of the loss of her three sisters to cancer, as well as her own recent breast cancer scare. After a mammogram's results were questionable, LaBelle explained that even though she was concerned, it was important to keep a sense of humor. "I got really big boobs, so they had to do it, like, 16 times under the lights!" Fortunately, the terrifying ordeal ended on a note of relief. "Thank Jesus!" the singer exclaimed, "I'm cancer free!"
LaBelle, after prodding from Rich, began an a cappella performance of "Over the Rainbow," in which she was joined by the sounds of a hidden piano. Much to the surprise of the audience (and LaBelle!), the curtain lifted and Stevie Wonder was unveiled taking "a backseat" at the keys. The duet opened the floodgates for an impromptu musical extravaganza, as Natalie Cole and Aisha Morris (Stevie's daughter) later joined LaBelle in crooning "Summertime."
Later, as a prominent couple were being photographed, a Red String Kabbalah Bracelet was spotted on the woman's arm, along with a drapery of dazzling diamonds. "Hide that red schmatta on your wrist… it just doesn't do the jewelry justice," we cracked.
Among the angels: Chairs Lyor Cohen and Thomas Wallace, Kelly Ripa, Clive Davis, Bryant Gumbel, Gayle King, Montel Williams, Nelly, and Joan Collins. Displeased with her seat placement, Collins was overheard commenting, "Don't they know how to seat a star?"
All in all, the event was another huge success for the Foundation, raising over $3 mil, including a generous donation of $1 mil from the Arab royal family of Abu Dhabi. The bash culminated with an after-party, and didn't stop there! Rich hosted a "Morning After Brunch" at her Fifth Avenue triplex penthouse, featuring Stevie's wife, designer Kai Milla.
Nobody does it better, Denise!
