Neal Travis’ wide smile, twinkling eye, and literary finesse lived in his memory at a smash soiree at Le Cirque in his memory. The bittersweet tribute given by Joan Jedell and pharmaceutical hancho Stewart Rahr was also a bon voyage fete for Neal’s wife Tolly, returning home to Australia. A throng of bold-faced names—including Ben and Elke Gazzara, Grace Hightower, Claudia Cohen, the Post’s Colin Myler, Donald Trump and Melania Knauss, Andrea Peyser, Ann Aquilina and Phil Mushnick, Victoria Gotti, Sharon Allan, Howard Rubenstein, RFR’s Richard Farley, David Granoff, Robert Zimmerman, Jeff Slonim, Felicia Taylor, Ann Rapp, Judy Licht and Jerry Della Femina, Bill Bratton and Court TV’s Rikki Klieman, Richard Valvo, Elaine Kaufman, Rona Jaffe, Isobel and Ron Konecky, Tricia and Phil Smith, Bill and Nancy O’Shaughnessy, Richard Kandel, Cynthia and Tony Maltese, Mickey Sherman, Kristi Witker, Somers and Jonathan Farkas, Couri Hay, and Sidney Zion—turned out to pay tribute to the legendary Post columnist and original Page Six editor, whose wit and humor will be sorely missed.

“Neal was a constant source of inspiration and encouragement,” said Jedell, as talented pianist Richard Currier played many of Travis’ favorite tunes. At the same time, Jedell added, “A first-class sendoff is only fitting for a gal like Tolly. And Neal, as you can see by this turnout, you are not forgotten, but you are terribly missed.”

Bill Bratton, who spent his last night in New York saluting Neal before jetting to LA to be sworn in as top cop, said, “My personal experience with Neal is that he tried to create a mayorality for me—twice! When you think of Neal, you think of somebody who really wanted to make this city a better place. He wanted to be king maker.”

Father Pete, who eulogized Travis at his funeral, said, “Neal wasn’t only a charming, witty journalist, but a lovable man. Even though he might be able to get the dirt, Neal wrote his stories without malice. He didn’t have a bad bone in his body.”

On a lighter note, Jedell concluded, “Now let’s all raise a glass and toast to Tolly for a safe trip … and a speedy return to a welcome-back party. Tolly, you are very much a part of New York. We are your friends and please don’t forget us.” Talk about one emotional, heartfelt evening!
