Kathleen Turner, Joy and Regis Philbin, Matthew Modine, Blaine and Robert Trump, Polly Bergen, Marthe Keller, Rex Reed, Anne Spader, Jose Carreno, director George Butler, and writer Caroline Alexander attended the premiere of Shakleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition at the Paris Theatre and a dinner at the Plaza. The flick, based on the adventures of Sir Ernest Shakleton, is one amazing survival saga—Shakleton and his crew of 28 aboard The Endurance survived being stuck in Antarctic ice for 635 days.
At the reception, Caroline Alexander compared Shakleton’s crew with the brave police and firefighters of September 11: “Where did the sailors’ courage come from? It’s a glimpse into our own better nature—that’s how Shakleton made it, and so did our heroes.” Morgan Stanley managing director Joe Perella, who lost six of his 1,000 employees, agreed: “They, like Shackleton’s crew, got out because of courage, leadership, and survival.” As for life after September 11, Regis Philbin told The Sheet: “The beautiful autumn in New York isn’t the same this year. Suddenly, all the things we took for granted are so important now—we are lucky!” Then Philbin added: “We’ve been through crises before—we can get through this!”
