Benicio Del Toro, Sidney Lumet, and Harold Bloom were honorees at the Stella by Starlight gala held at the Rainbow Room for the Stella Adler School of Acting’s 100th anniversary of the legendary drama teacher’s birth. The gala drew celebs like Lauren Bacall, Peter Bogdanovich, Tina Louise, and Matthew and Cari Modine, included a performance of “25 Great American Plays of the 20th Century in 20 Minutes” by Roy Scheider, Kaitlin Hopkins, Audra McDonald, Jack McMartin, Robert Sean Leonard, and Lois Smith, and an after-dinner blow-out by Bette Midler. The Sheet caught up with Del Toro who, after much deep thought and a puzzled expression, offered his view on the events of September 11: “You have to look at the world, and pay attention to what’s going on in other places—it’s a big neighborhood. And we’re not the only one in the neighborhood” … hmmm. It was definitely a most star-lit Stella evening, with the blazing Manhattan skyline stealing the show.
