It was a fight to the finish with goody bag madness—call it “goody bag rage”—at the fourth anniversary celebration of The Hampton Sheet and Joan Jedell’s Hot Shots Exhibition “Chronicles of New York.” A-listers galore crammed Cabaña at Southampton’s Capri Hotel and hauled away hot gifts in a fab nylon Banana Republic bag, containing such A-products as John Barrett Salon hair polishing spray, J Records’ CDs by Luther Vandross and Jimmy Cozier, Oil of Olay, Tommy Boy Records’ MTV Remixed CD, Versace lipstick, Bulgari perfume, Bobbi Brown eye shadow, King of Shaves oil, an A La Maison silver photo frame, Pepsi Cola’s Aquafina water, the controversial hot read Tina and Harry Come to America(Simon & Schuster), Jane & Goldie’s sourdough chips, Mezzaluna Vodka, Honest Tea, and Park Avenue Mortgage baseball hats.

Some comments from the crowd: “The best goody bags I ever had!” “I almost got a hernia carrying it out.” “We needed a wheel barrow to haul it out!” Some circled around the mass of bags and swooped down on more than one, with such excuses as: “I work for the Mayor, I should have one.” Another comment: “You know, you could be charged with sexual discrimination for this,” one male guest quipped. And get this … from another male guest: “But I wear women’s perfume. I use hairspray. I wear lipstick. I even have makeup on my arms.”

Only the guests outdid the bags (and of course many too proper to argue over goody bags): Denise Rich, Marty Richards, Abe Vigoda and Ellen Evans (who shot a TV pilot in the fall called Family Values), Elizabeth Fekkai, Laura Steinberg, Bill Bratton and Rikki Klieman, Ivan Wilzig, Carl Spielvogel, Stan Birnbaum, Jerry and Adrianne Cohen, Liana Silverstein, John Visconti III, Steve Grossman, and Betsy McCaughey.

The highlight of the day was definitely the cool Caribbean sounds of Island Sol (www.islandsolband.com) and a guest performance by Product G&B (produced by Yclef and Clive Davis’ J Records)—coming off their number one smash single “Maria Maria” with Carlos Santana. Not to mention the fab singing sensation Chantele, who The Sheet considers its own new discovery. It was one great afternoon under a grand P.J. McBride tent. And a special thanks to Duck Walk Vineyards for their fine wine!
