It was an evening fit for a king-or at the very least a "fresh prince"-as the Museum of Moving Images honored Will Smith for his diverse, accomplished acting career. The Waldorf played host to the all-star tribute, where co-chairs Alan Horn, James Lassiter (Smith's partner in Overbrook Entertainment), Amy Pascal, and Sir Howard Stringer joined Jada Pinkett Smith in recognizing Will's many achievements, in an homage that included a montage of classic moments from his films.
When wife Jada took to the stage, Will let out an unexpected howl and catcall from the audience. In a speech that brought tears to her hubby's eyes, Jada said, "Who would have thought a little girl from Baltimore, with no father and no love from a man, could have all this?" She continued, "You are the brightest gift in my life, thank you … the man who gave me everything."
Will stars in this season's feel-good movie, The Pursuit of Happyness, in which he is joined by Thandie Newton and his real-life son, 8-year-old Jaden. Judging by the pint-sized protege's show-stopping performance, Jaden is certain to follow in his father's gifted footsteps. We asked Will if he thought his son could win an Oscar for his role. The humble actor told us, "We're just having fun, not letting anything go to our heads."
When Will took the stage, he delighted the audience with his trademark humor. "I'd like to thank my mother for making love to my father.… I know it was not easy!"
Attendees included Jamie Foxx, Queen Latifah, Derek Luke, Bill Pullman, Eva Mendes, Terrence Howard, Bridget Moynahan, Tamara Tunie, Cedric the Entertainer, Alfonso Ribeiro, Randy Quaid, Chevy Chase, John Guare, and Stockard Channing.
