W.C. Fields’ famous quote “I never work with animals or children” was thrown completely out the window at Cindy Adams’ Celebrity Dog Party debuting the style-conscious doggie boutique at Macy’s, “Jazzy Park Avenue.” Celebrities and their pooch pals roamed the halls filled with Jazzy-inspired designs including vinyl newsprint tote bags, heart-shaped dog treats, a Jazzy plush toy created by Gund, and the very hip and sassy babydoll tees in black, white, and red with sequined sayings like (our favorite) “Gossip Hound” emblazoned on the front. Guests also received copies of the new read, The Gift of Jazzy, autographed by the guests of honor and authors themselves, Jazzy and Cindy.
The Sheet braved the animal farm with its own pure-bred (albeit invisible) novelty dog leash named “Missy.” After all, Cindy told everyone they had to bring a dog to get into the party. Unfortunately, the missing, and misbehaving, “Missy” was hung up to dry on the coat-rack for the rest of the evening. Most everyone else brought puppies that could be detected by the naked eye … a good thing since Hans Blix inspectors were needed elsewhere. Blaine Trump’s cuddly “Pearl” was present, joined by Dennis Basso’s furry “Max,” Sally Jessy Raphael’s “Elmo,” Oleg Cassini’s rambunctious “Rambo,” Judith Ripka’s precious “Pookie,” and Mary Tyler Moore’s “Shana.” All guests enjoyed the attention and, of course, sniffing out new friends. Judge Judy, whose best-selling book Don’t Pee on My Leg and Tell Me it’s Raining, warned the guest of honor, “Now Jazzy, don’t pee on me sweetheart.” Her Honor also gave us a little scoop of poop on Cindy’s man of the hour, “Jazzy is an ill-mannered dog,” she confided, standing by her own pooch, Lulu. “He [Jazzy] goes to obedience school every Thursday.” And Judge Judy should know a thing or two about the ill mannered, dealing with disobedient characters everyday on her eponymous show.
Henry Kissinger, no dog in tow, was also on hand, exclaiming, “I love dogs!” Susan Lucci was with her four-legged guy “Oscar,” and she praised Jazzy as a seductive Casanova: “Oscar had a playdate with Jazzy … they were continuously French-kissing!” Sonya Fitzgerald, the pet psychic, was on hand, no doubt losing her mind with all the celebrity dogs vying for her attention. (Sometimes we’re glad we can’t speak to the animals.) New York Times’ Alex Kuczynski brought her adorable “Pickles,” and what a natural Pickles was for the camera. Alex quipped, “Oh, I know. She’s a total tramp.” Cindy’s new addition “Juicy” made her debut at the event as well. According to Sharon Allan there’s been a bit of trouble with sibling rivalry in the household, and she received a frantic call from Cindy asking for some parenting advice. A great idea, but for the fact Sharon only “owns” children of the human kind, not furry little ones. “Cindy asked me how my eldest got along with the baby at first. I just told her, Jazzy will get used to Juicy.”
Other guests parading perfect pets were Ileana Douglas and her “Godfrey,” Bryant Gumbel and wife Hilary Quinlan with “Cujo,” Barry Slotnick and “Buddha” (who arrived with a collar of fresh roses), and Lizzie Grubman and her, not one, but three little pretties: “Peanut,” “Xuxa” and, “Crunch” to boot! Liza Minnelli arrived carrying “Emmalina,” with hubby David Gest and “Squyggles” in tow. So many four-legged friends, it might as well have been a zoo. If Jack Frost hadn’t cursed Manhattan with such a bitter-cold winter, you could’ve called this a dog day afternoon or asked, “Who let the dogs out?”
