The Marquis Theatre was a parade of to-die-for frocks and “feathered friends” at the opening-night performance of the revival of La Cage aux Folles, directed by Jerry Zaks and based on the music and lyrics of Jerry Herman and the book by Harvey Fierstein (who both won Tony awards for the original production).
La Cage began as a stage farce in Paris, then became a 1978 French film with a cult following, and finally hit the Broadway stage in 1983. Robin Williams and Nathan Lane hilariously brought the characters back to life in the 1996 Mike Nichols film, The Bird Cage. Nearly a decade later, it is back on Broadway with its over-the-top glitz, glamour, and humor.
“Scene” among the A-list crowd in the theatre and at the swank Marriott Marquis after-party: Liz Smith, Joy and Regis Philbin, Rosie O’Donnell and wife Kelli Carpenter, Richard Kind, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Marty Richards, Rue McClanahan, Lynn Redgrave, Star Jones Reynolds, Phil Smith, Joan Collins and Percy Gibson, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Patricia Neal, Cece Cord, Queer Eye’s Jai Rodriguez, Celeste Holm, Tommy Tune, Max Von Essen, Ann Rapp, Denise Rich, Charles Busch, and Lucia Hwong Gordon.
La Cage has returned, with its raucous charm and boisterous camaraderie — without missing a beat!
