The New York City Opera celebrated its spring sea- son and longtime dedication to musical theater with a concert titled Defying Gravity: The Music of Stephen Schwartz, featuring works by the awardwinning Broadway and film composer at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. Guests enjoyed a dinner/dance honoring Schwartz on the Promenade following the concert, which featured performers Kristin Chenoweth, Raúl Esparza, Victor Garber, and Ann Hampton Callaway.
Chairs and guests included Julia and David Koch, Davis Stone, Marc Platt, Angela Chao, Frieda and Roy Furman, Sylvia Golden, Lynn Loacker, Mark and Lorry Newhouse, Svetlana and Herbert Wachtell, Coco and Arie Kopelman, HRH Princess Alexandra of Greece, Caroline and Paul Cronson, Charles Wall, Isaac Mizrahi, and Robert Verdi.
The gala raised an inspiring $838,830 that went toward supporting the Opera’s mission to create innovative productions of new and classic works, reach a wide audience with affordable ticket prices, and bring music into the lives of thousands of students each year through its acclaimed education programs. The evening defied gravity, going above and beyond expectations.
