New York Women in Communications, now marking its 75th year, hosted its Matrix Awards luncheon at The Waldorf, honoring “Women Who Change the World” in their respective com-munications fields. This year’s recipients included: Bernadette Peters (arts & entertainment), CNN’s Paula Zahn (broadcasting), People’s Martha Nelson (magazines), The Wall Street Journal’s Alix Freedman (newspapers), Penguin Group (USA)’s Susan Petersen Kennedy (books), Nell Merlino of Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence (online media), Young & Rubicam’s Ann Fudge (advertising), and The Hearst Corporation’s Debra Shriver (public relations).

While accepting her arts & entertainment award from Joel Grey, Peters graciously compared her own career to skiing. One’s instinct is to lean back, she explained, which would almost certainly result in a downhill tragedy. However, “it is when you lean forward, into what seems like nothing, that you fly!”

Circulating in the grand ballroom: Candice Bergen, Hilary Swank, Ellen Burstyn, Mandy Grunwald, Caroline Hirsch, Cathleen Black, and Vernon Jordan. Each award recipient received a Tiffany-designed award in a signature blue box, sashed with a white ribbon. A sparkling treat for the shining star in each field!
