Fashion style-maker Iris Apfel

All eyes were on Iris-and her designs-at a luncheon to celebrate the exhibition, "Rara Avis: Selections from the Iris Barrel Apfel Collection," at the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute.

The event, hosted by Andrea Stark, showcased over 50 years of the 84-year-old interior designer and textile company co-founder's wardrobe, complete with 82 ensembles and over 300 accessories-all vibrant outliers to popular fashion trends. Apfel, a native New Yorker, has a highly unique and original style, a boldly innovative look compiled from high-and-low fashion finds and accessories from all over the world.

The interior designer spent years traveling the world with her husband, Carl, in search of exquisite fabrics for their textile company, Old World Weavers, acquiring armfuls of colorful couture and her favorite fashion statement-accessories! This dynamic duo's company has served clientele such as Greta Garbo, Marjorie Merriweather Post, and Estée Lauder, and has worked on restoration projects at the White House, the Met, and the Flagler Museum in West Palm Beach. The Apfels sold their company to Stark Carpets in 1992, staying on as consultants.

Apfel-in her signature round, oversized eyeglasses and quadruple-bangled wrists-was the most fashionable accessory of all!
