Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith

Broadway’s hottest couple, Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith, were hon-ored at The Pierre for The Drama League’s 19th Annual Gala, “A Musical Celebration of Broadway,” chaired by Jerry Orbach. The Drama League is a service organization for theater professionals and aficionados who love American theater (those wanting to enhance their understanding and experience live theater), and offers a training program for emerging theater artists.

The League’s tribute featured the dazzling talents of Chita Rivera, Karen Ziemba, Tonya Pinkins, Howard McGillin, Pricilla Lopez, Brent Barrett, Eugene Fleming, Rona Figuerora, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and Christine Ebersole, and brought tears to Banderas’s big brown eyes.

The celebrity duo headlined simultaneously on Broadway—Griffith sparkled as “Roxie Hart” in Chicago beginning last July while Banderas originated the Tony-nominated role of “Guido” in the revival Nine (which opened in April of 2002). Ever since they both stepped down from their prospective shows (on the same day — October 5, 2003), the couple have been seriously planning a relocation to New York from their L.A. home base. This leaves audiences to wonder when the lovers will be appearing on Broadway again, perhaps this time on the same stage!
